Original color portrait from the Palmer family archive. The digital file's EXIF date (2020-12-13) records when the print was re-photographed, not when the original portrait was taken. Date of the underlying photograph is unknown. Used on Biography and About the Archive pages.

Confidence correction. The EXIF date (2020-12-13) was initially interpreted as the date the portrait was taken. On review, the source file is a digital photograph of a printed photograph -- the EXIF date records when the print was re-photographed, not when the original portrait was created. The date has been reclassified: digitizationDate is verified (EXIF-confirmed), while approximateDate, exactDate, and lifePeriod are reclassified to unknown pending independent documentation of the original portrait date. Robert identification and provenance remain verified. Description and notes updated to remove the inference that the portrait was taken eighteen days before his death.

  2. 2026-07-24

Initial field-level assessment. Robert identification, date (EXIF 2020-12-13), life period, provenance, and rights are all verified through the Palmer family archive and EXIF metadata. Location, venue, photographer, event, recording session, and tour remain unknown -- this was a private portrait taken eighteen days before his death with no supporting documentation for those fields.

Initial cataloging. The film developer date stamp 'DEC 70' is direct physical evidence of the development date (December 1970). The square format and white border are consistent with Kodak Instamatic or similar consumer cameras of the era. If the subject is Robert D. Palmer (born December 19, 1953), this would have been taken when he was 16 or 17 years old -- consistent with the apparent age of the subject. Person identification is 'low' based on family archive context only; no caption or corroborating documentation confirms the subject's identity. lifePeriod is scored 'low' rather than higher because the life period claim (Robert's teenage years) is contingent on the person identification, which is itself low confidence. The home living room location is 'low' based on family archive context.

  1. 2026-07-25

Family identification by Kary Youman confirms Robert D. Palmer, Chaka Khan, and Howard McCrary are present in this photograph. The recording session context has not been independently confirmed. People identification updated from unknown/low to high confidence (family testimony). EvidenceStatus updated from under-investigation to family-oral-history.

  2. 2026-07-24

Initial cataloging. Three photographs in the archive (PHOTO-0017, PHOTO-0018, PHOTO-0024) appear to depict the same recording session from different spaces (studio hallway, vocal booth, control room). The central woman with reddish-brown curly hair appears in all three. If this session is Chaka Khan's Come 2 My House (1998, source S004), the central woman would be Chaka Khan. This identification could not be confirmed from the photographs alone; under active investigation. See people-to-identify.md and research-leads.md for investigative approach.

Confidence correction, parallel to MEDIA-001. This file is a derivative of MEDIA-001, which is itself a re-photograph of a printed photograph. The EXIF date (2020-12-13) records the digitization of the source print, not the date the original portrait was taken. approximateDate, exactDate, and lifePeriod reclassified to unknown. digitizationDate added as verified (inherited from MEDIA-001). archiveRelationships remains verified -- the derivation from MEDIA-001 is confirmed.

  2. 2026-07-24

Initial field-level assessment. All core fields inherit from MEDIA-001 (the source photograph). Archive relationship to MEDIA-001 is verified -- this is a direct editorial black-and-white conversion with no additional information. Location, venue, photographer, event, recording session, and tour remain unknown.
